Telegraph strike threat suspended

The Press Gazette reports that compulsory imposition of new rotas which include Saturday working will also be suspended. Any journalists volunteering for more flexible working patterns in the new integrated newsroom will receive £5,000.
There will now be further negotiations with the NUJ. The fact that it got to a strike ballot is an indication of the chaotic state management of the newspapers had got itself into.
But a strike would, in the long term, have served no one’s interests. Papers where managers and journalists work together to evolve to meet the digital challenge will stand the best chance of surviving what is bound to be a rough ride.
