Press Gazette to cease publication

By Andrew Grant-Adamson • Apr 6th, 2009 • Category: Journalism, Newspapers

The end of the Press Gazette is sad but not unexpected. Back in November 2006 when it closed previously I wrote: “Perhaps the title will survive in some form.” A future on the web looked like the best chance it had

But then it was bought out of receivership by Wilmington who continued the print edition. Today they haveĀ  announced that the print edition will cease:

Unfortunately Press Gazette, along with much of the profession, has suffered from a declining market during these years and its losses have increased. We have therefore been forced to conclude that the market required to sustain a commercially viable Press Gazette magazine no longer exists. The last hard copy edition of Press Gazette will therefore be the May edition which will be published in April.

The web site will remain but according to Hold the Front Page there will be no news content after this weekend. It will offer other services such as training and freelance referrals.

Wilmington says The British Press Awards have gone from strength to strength over the last three years and they remain fully committed to running these and similar events.

The awards were probably the most valuable asset they bought from the receivers in 2006 although there were then still suffering from problems under the previous Press Gazette ownership of Matthew Freud and Piers Morgan when that revenue stream was hit by rowdy behaviour and boycotts.
