What is the average age of entry to journalism in Britain?

Me, neither. But whatever it is it has been hiked by the arrival of 100-year-old Rose Hacker at the Camden New Journal. Editor Eric Gordon was so impressed when he heard her speak, at an event commemorating victims of atomic bombs in Japan, that he hired her to write a fortnightly column. Her first was about the threat of world war and the British media’s reporting of nuclear proliferation.

Although she has come to journalism late she wrote books in the 1950s, including one on sex education. Being a late starter appears to be nothing new to her: in her nineties she began teaching dance classes.

At 100, she is seven years older than Bill Deedes, the Telegraph’s veteran columnist. But is she actually the oldest journalist, as Woman’s Hour claimed when they interviewed her on Thursday?
